Labels are as important to a herbarium specimen as the plant, alga, or fungus itself. A good label tells you who collected this specimen, where it was collected, and when. A great label goes beyond those basics: descriptive details of features that might be lost after drying, the habitat where it grows, known uses, what other species might be growing nearby.
While functional, labels can also have a great design. Interesting colors, font choices, or decorative elements all catch my eye when I'm looking through specimens. Decorative borders can really make a label stand out; here's a collection of some of my favorite borders.
