A picture is worth a thousand words, and sometimes it's easier to take a photograph of a plant to show both the habitat and size—especially if only a small part of it will fit on a herbarium sheet.
A botanist might ask a colleague in the field, a family member, a local guide, or even the local children to either take their photo or pose for a photo next to a plant to provide a sense of scale. Here are some of my favorite examples of people used for scale.
