With their vibrant purples, deep reds and bright yellows, Mums (or Chrysanthemums) are always a favorite in autumn. Chrysanthemums originated in Asia and northeastern Europe, first cultivated in China as early as 15th Century B.C.¹ In Japan they are called Kiku, where there is a tradition of training Chrysanthemums into unique displays.
With such a long history of cultivation there are thousands of cultivars, many stemming from the species Chrysanthemum indicum. One of the most popular hybrids is Chrysanthemum x morifolium. In the herbarium we also have many wild species of mums, collected all around the world.
