Air plants

The little air plant in your house that you mist every day could be Tillandsia recurvata (L.) L.

It is in the Bromeliaceae family, containing 650 species. Many of these are epiphytes, meaning they grow on the branches of trees instead of having roots in the ground. Air plants can absorb water from the air through the silvery hairs on their leaves called trichomes.

The genus Tillandsia can be quite variable. Species with thinner, more delicate leaves like T. recurvata grow in wetter climates. Those with thicker more succulent leaves grow in drier climates.
