Term:

Raphe
Definition:

A ridge on a seed formed by the fusion of the funicle to the seed coat, usually indicated by a scar after the seed has been formed.
Notes:

In neotropical Lecythidaceae the raphe is easily seen only in those species that have the funicle/aril running laterally along the length of the seed (e.g., species of the largest clade of Eschweilea). In those species with basal arils there is a basal scar where the funicle and aril were attached but this is not considered to be a raphe.
