This term is interpreted by by making a medial section through the androecium. In New World Lecythidaceae, there is a continuum starting with flat to curved inward to coiled once, coiled twice, and coiled thrice. It takes considerable experience to intepret these rather subtile differences in hood complexity. Species with triple-coiled hoods are relatively common in Mesoamerica and western South America and relatively uncommon in the Amazon and the Guianas. They have not been observed in the Mata Atlantica of eastern Brazil.
