Habit, habitat, and distribution: Gregarious on soil under either Quercus oocarpa Liebm. or Q. insignis Mart. and Gal. Currently only known from one site in the northern Cordillera Talamanca.
Commentary: Boletus lychnipes superficially resembles B. auripes Peck in overall coloration, but the latter taxon has a conspicuously reticulate stipe over the upper half and doesn't stain brown or salmon pink on the stipe. The conspicuously sterile margin and prominent pseudocystidia are also characteristic for B. lychnipes.
