Method 1

In the Name field on the Determination tab in the Catalog, type "Sphaeralcea" and press the Tab key. EMu searches and opens the Taxonomy module:

  • Notice that:
    • The word "Sphaeralcea" in the Summary Data field is highlighted in red type. EMu displays all matches to searches in this fashion, in those fields in which the user searched. When a user searches in an attachment field, EMU uses the Summary Data of the attached module as the search field.

  • The number of matching records is displayed at the bottom of the screen. In this case, we have matched 11 records.

  1. To see a summary list of the matches, click Show List  (Alt + V + I). This view is often better for getting a quick overview of the search results. Note: Users can change which fields display in the List View at any time. This will be covered in another course.

  1. In the List View, the Summary Data of all 11 matching records are displayed. Details of any record can be seen by double-clicking a row, or by clicking Show Detail  (Alt + V + D). Click Show List  (Alt + V + I) to return to the list.
  2. To add a taxon to our Catalog record, click on a taxon and click Attach  (Alt + F + L).

Method 2

  • An alternate method attaching a taxon to a specimen record, which some users may prefer, is as follows.

  1. From the Command Center, open the Catalog (if not already opened) and Click New (Ctrl + N).

  1. Open the Taxonomy module. Notice that the module opens in Query Mode, with some fields already filled in. These default values can be changed, but for now we'll leave them as they are.
  2. In the Genus field, type "Sphaeralcea", then click Find  (Ctrl + F).

  1. After the search is finished, the results are displayed in List View. Details of any record can be seen by double-clicking a row, or by clicking Show Detail  (Alt + V + D). Click Show List  (Alt + V + I) to return to the list.
  2. Click and hold Drag…, then move the cursor over the Catalog Module and then over the Name field and release. This creates an attachment to the Taxonomy module and the scientific name should now appear in the Name field.

  • Some fields, such as Determiners in the Catalog, can accept more than one value. It is possible to drag and drop more than one value at a time into these fields by highlighting more than one record in a list and using the Drag Selected… button in the same manner.
