Phalaenopsis, the moth orchids, are perhaps the most commonly cultivated orchid. With their big oval shaped flowers that bloom for more than a month and forgiving cultivation needs (minimal water, low light), Phalaenopsis are a favorite of house plant enthusiasts.

The genus Phalaenopsis consists of 87 naturally occuring species and hybrids distributed across tropical Asia and Australia. Most of the plants in cultivation are complex hybrids of several species, giving rise to larger flowers with more vivid colors. Although the genus is commonly cultivated, many wild Phalaenopsis are highly endangered in the wild.
