Lichens are highly adapted organisms found in nearly every ecosystem on Earth, including at the seashore. If left undisturbed for long enough they might even be found growing on other organisms, such as mollusk shells and barnacles. Look closely, though! While some maritime species are more conspicuous in size and color, many can be easily overlooked, so remember to pack your hand lens the next time you head to the beach! To embrace the remaining days of summer, here are some lichens collected from various seaside locations.
