Árbol espinoso de hojas caducas que alcanza 80 pies de alto con tronco derecho de 2 a 4 pies de diámetro. Se distingue por copa globular con follaje espeso, hojas acorazonadas, cápsulas grandes castaño oscuro divididas en secciones por ranuras y látex copioso blancuzco irritante venenoso. La madera se ha usado para postes de cercas y combustible. Crece a orillas de carreteras en la costa húmeda especialmente al este de Puerto Rico. Está distribuido en las Antillas, desde Costa Rica hasta parte del territorio de América del Sur y trópicos del Viejo Mundo. Thorny tree of deciduous leaves that reaches 80 feet of height and a straight trunk of 2 to 4 feet of diameter. It is distinguished by globular canopy, thick foliage, heart shaped leaves, abundant irritating poisonous whitish latex, and large dark brown capsules in split-sectioned grooves. The wood has been used for posts of fences and fuel. It grows along borders of highways and is used for hedges in the humid coast of Puerto Rico, especially to the East. It is distributed in the Antilles and from Costa Rica to parts of the territory of South America and in the Tropics of the Old World.
