Description:

Latin Diagnosis - Ab E. panamensi foliis majoribus (15-32 x 10-18.5 cm nec 11-18 x 7-9 cm) et paribus venarm lateralium magis numerosis (12-19 nec 10-12) differt.

Description - Tree, 20 m x 40 cm. Bark brown, slightly fissured. Leaf blades widely elliptic to elliptic, 15-32 x 10-18.5 cm, glabrous, with black punctae abaxially, with 12-19 pairs of lateral veins; apex short acuminate; base rounded; margins entire to finely crenulate; petiole 20-25 mm long. Inflorescences from branches below leaves or in axils of uppermost leaves, once-branched paniculate arrangement of racemes, the principal rachis 9-35 cm long, the secondary rachises well developed, to 20 cm long, all rachises more or less zig-zag, markedly lenticellate, with persistent pedicel bases, the pedicels 10-12 mm long. Flowers 4-5 cm diam.; calyx with six lobes, the lobes very widely ovate, 3 x 4.5 mm, spreading, not imbricate, carinate abaxially, flat adaxially, thicker than long; petals six, widely ovate, 2427 x 19-21 mm, greenish outside, cream-colored inside; hood of androecium 24 x 23 mm, forming triple coil, yellow; staminal ring with 316 stamens, the filaments 2.5 mm long, clavate, cream-colored, the anthers 0.8 mm long, yellow; hypanthium cuneate, glabrous, lenticellate; ovary 2-locular, each with 8-9 ovules attached to placenta at base of septum, horizontally oriented, the style erect, 5 mm long. Fruits unknown.

Discussion:

Eschweilera longirachis is morphologically similar to E. panamensis but differs from it by the larger size of all of its parts as well as the characters enumerated in the key. The epithet alludes to the long principal rachis of some of the inflorescences.
