Description:
Genus Description - Understory, canopy, or, less frequently, emergent trees, unbuttressed or buttressed. Bark smooth, scalloped, or with very fine vertically oriented cracks. Leaves eucamptrodromous at base to brochidodromous toward apex, the tertiary veins reticulate. Buds globose. Flowers diurnal, zygomorphic; calyx with (4-)6 lobes; petals (4-)6, the apices rounded; androe-cium with well-developed hood forming complete coil, the anthers of staminal ring <2 mm long, with lateral dehiscence; ovary 2(-4)-locular, the ovules inserted on floor of locule. Fruits globose to turbinate (cylindric only in E. amazoniciformis). Seeds usually with lateral aril (basal only in E. amazoniciformis); embryo without cotyledons.
