Description:
Tall 2 to 4 meters high; leaves subcoriaceous descending, rich smooth green above, paler beneath, the lowermost much smaller and scattering; inflorescence erect, 1/2 to 1 foot long or even longer, rigid; flowers arranged in distichous rows, ascending, subtended by marcescent sheath, calyx rigid, reddish; corolla creamy white, soft but rather succulent; disk shaped stigma reddish and filled with a tasteless mucilaginous liquid; very common; capsule hard, yellowish white, 1 1/2 inch long, ellipsoid; seeds dark brown or nearly black, eaten by the natives.
