Árbol de 24 pies de alto bien ramificado con raíces arqueadas, hojas coriáceas, flores amarillo pálido y frutos castaño oscuro con semillas que germinan antes de que el fruto caiga. Los taninos de la corteza tienen propiedades astringentes que se han usado para curar úlceras, heridas, hemorragias internas, como febrífugo y contra el asma. Es una sustancia importante para la industria del curtido de pieles. Es una de las especies que forman el manglar puertorriqueño. Está distribuido en las costas del Océano Atlántico, desde Florida hasta Brasil y África Occidental. Well grafted tree of 24 feet of height with arched roots, leathery leaves, yellow pale flowers, and dark brown fruits with seeds that germinate before the fruit falls. The tannins of the crust have astringent properties that have been used to cure ulcers, internal wounds, and hemorrhages. It has also been used to control fevers and against the asthma. It is an important substance for the industry of leather and furs dyeing. It is one of four species of the Puerto Rican mangroves.
