Description:
Árbol de hojas caedizas, crecimiento rápido, raíces tubulares angostas y copa amplia que puede alcanzar 80 pies de alto y 8 pies de diámetro en el tronco. Posee hojas colgantes, flores blancuzcas o rosadas y semillas con fibras lanosas dentro de una cápsula. Es planta melífera. La infusión de la corteza y raíces se ha usado en la medicina casera como aperitivo, diurético y para curar heridas. De los troncos de los árboles los indios construían canoas y tambores. Los viveros del Departamento de Recursos Naturales y Ambientales y Fideicomiso de Conservación propagan esta especie como árbol de sombra y ornato. Crece silvestre en riberas de ríos, zonas montañosas bajas y áridas del sur Puerto Rico. Está distribuido también en las Antillas, Florida, Centro y Sur América, Asia y África. Tree of caduceus leaves, fast growth, narrow tubular roots and ample canopy that can reach to eight feet of height and eight feet of diameter in the trunk. It has hanging leaves, whitish or pink flowers, and seeds with woolly fibers within a capsule. It is a melliferous plant. An infusion of crust and roots has been used in home remedies as a diuretic and to heal wounds. Of the trunks of the trees, the aborigenes constructed canoes and drums. The Department of Natural and Environmental Resources and the Conservation Trust propagates this species as shade tree and an ornamental. It grows wild at the low mountainous zones, along the shores of the rivers and in the barren zones of the South of Puerto Rico. It is also distributed in the Antilles, Florida, Central and the South America, Asia and Africa.
