Description:

Description: Canopy to emergent trees. Leaves scattered along branches, medium to large sized (6-30 cm long), glabrous; secondary venation distinctly percurrent. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, racemose or once-branched paniculate arrangements of racemes, growth of rachises determinate. Flowers present with leaves, actinomorphic, fleshy; sepals 5; petals 5; hooked at apices; androecium a fleshy tube, the stamens at margen of or scattered over inner surface of tube, reflexed, the anthers laterally dehiscent; ovary 3-locular except (3)4-5-locular in A. lineata, ovules often 10-12, sometimes numerous, attached through middle of locule (this needs to be confirmed), the style without stylar collar. Fruit dehiscent, remaining on tree at maturity, cylindric, pericarp relatively thick. Seeds unilaterally winged, numerous, not flattened, not embedded in pulp, the testa glabrous; cotyledons absent.

Distribution: Western Amazonian except for A. lineata which is found in the vicinity of the upper Río Orinoco in Venezuela, the Rio Negro, and from the mouth of the Rio Negro to the mouth of the Amazon in Brazil. Absent from the Guianas and, except for A. lineata from eastern Amazonia.

Ecology: Allantoma lineata is found in forests in low wet areas along rivers and streams; the other species inhabit terra firme forests.

Number of species: Eight species.

Taxonomic notes: Until recently Allantoma lineata was the only species in the genus. However, Huang and Mori (2007) demonstrated that the actinomorphic-flowered species of Cariniana are more closely related to Allantoma lineata (also with actinomorphic flowers) than they are to the remaining zygomorphic-flowered species of Cariniana.
