Description:
Description - Large trees, to 60 m tall, with straight, non-buttressed boles. Twigs glabrous. Bark of young trees with vertical fissures, these not so pronounced in older trees, the outer bark of older trees shedding in rectangular plates. Leaf blades oblong to narrowly oblong, infrequently elliptic, 23- 37 x 11-16 cm, glabrous, coriaceous, with 24- 25 pairs of lateral veins; apex short acuminate to acuminate; base obtuse to rounded; margins entire to crenulate; petiole 9-22 mm long, canaliculate, glabrous. Inflorescences spicate, terminal or in axils of uppermost leaves, unbranched, once-branched, or infrequently 3-branched, the rachises with rust-colored pubescence when young, glabrous with age, each flower subtended by a cucullate ovate bract, 9-10x10 mm and 2 cucullate, keeled, ovate bracteoles, 6-19 x 6-7 mm, with fimbriate margins. Flowers 4-6 cm diam.; calyx with six ovate to widely ovate, keeled, erect, green lobes, 8-15 x 7-12 mm, rounded at apices, imbricate at bases, the margins early fimbriate, later entire; petals six, widely to narrowly obovate, 20-40 x 12-22 mm, yellow; hood of androecium dorsiventrally expanded at apex, yellow, 15-22 x 16-27 mm, the appendages curved inwards at apex, antherless or with vestigial anthers; staminal ring with 299-360 stamens, the filaments 1.2-2 mm long, clavate, the anthers 0.5-0.7 mm long; hypanthium glabrous to puberulous; ovary 4-locular, with 2-7 ovules in each locule, the ovules inserted on floor of locule at juncture with septum, the summit umbonate, not well differentiated from style, the style 1.5-2 mm long. Fruits subglobose, the supracalycine zone erect, the infracalycine zone gradually tapered from calycine ring to base or abruptly constricted directly below calycine ring, 9.5-14.5 x 10-17.5 cm, the exocarp verrucose, dark brown, the pericarp 1.5 2.5 cm thick; opercular opening 8-12.5 cm diam., its rim usually muricate. Seeds oblong, 4.5-7 x 2-3 cm, reddish brown, marked with 3-6 light brown, slightly recessed veins, the testa smooth, with funicle and aril scar at base, the aril not seen. X = 17.

Discussion:
The fruits and seeds of L. tuyrana are used by the Cuna Indians in their folk medicines. It is a handsome tree which is occasionally planted as an ornamental in the Canal Zone. The large, oblong-shaped leaves, sulphur-yellow flowers, and characteristically shaped fruits (Fig. 107) distinguish L. tuyrana from all other species of the genus.
