Description:

Latin Diagnosis - A ceteris generis speciebus foliis subcordatis ad apicem rotundatis differt.

Description - Small trees 8-10 m tall. Leaf blades suborbiculate, 4.5-7 x 3-5 cm, glabrous except puberulous on lower abaxial midrib, coriaceous, the midrib salient on both surfaces, with 5-8 pairs of lateral veins, these and higher vein orders plane, especially abaxially; apex rounded; base rounded to subcordate; margins entire, scarcely to markedly revolute; petiole 2-4 mm long. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, racemose, usually unbranched, the rachis 7-15 cm long, puberulous, lenticellate; pedicels 3-4 mm long, puberulous, the part below articulation persisting on inflorescence as woody stalk 1-3 mm long. Flowers 3-4 cm diam.; calyx with 6 lobes, the lobes very widely ovate, obliquely oriented, slightly imbricate at base, 2-3 x 3.5-4.5 mm, slightly convex abaxially, flat adaxially; petals six, widely obovate, 20-29 x 14-16 mm, yellow; hood of androecium 15 x 20 mm, forming double coil, yellow; staminal ring with 240 stamens, the filaments clavate, 1.5 mm long, the anthers 0.5 mm long; hypanthium cuneate, tapered into pedicel; ovary 2-locular, with 35-40 basally attached ovules, the style obconical, poorly differentiated from summit, 1.5 mm high. Fruits unknown.

Discussion:

Eschweilera subcordata is readily distinguished by its subcordate leaves with rounded apex and plane lateral veins. In addition, the numerous ovules (35-40 per locule) are unusual for a species of Eschweilera.
