Description:
Latin Diagnosis - A ceteris generis speciebus basi foliorum lamina petiolum basi amplectenti differt.
Description - Medium-sized trees, to 20 m tall. Bark nearly smooth or with shallow longitudinal fissures. Leaf blades elliptic, 11-21 x 5-9 cm, glabrous, chartaceous, with 8-12 pairs of lateral veins; apex acuminate; base obtuse, clasping petiole; margins entire; petiole 2-4 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, racemose, the rachis 1-3 cm long, glabrous, the pedicels ca. 4 mm long. Flowers 3-4 cm diam.; calyx with six lobes, the lobes widely ovate, 3-5.5 x 2.5-4 mm, horizontally oriented, thick, carinate abaxially, flat to slightly concave adaxially; petals six, widely obovate, 21-27 x 14-17 mm, pink, with streaks and dots of yellow and white, to completely purple; hood of androecium 18 x 24 mm, yellow with streaks of pink, forming double or weak triple coil; staminal ring with 215-270 stamens, the filaments clavate, 2-2.5 mm long, the anthers ca. 0.7 mm long, yellow; hypanthium glabrous, truncate below sepal attachment into short pedicel; ovary 2(-3)-locular, with 5-8 basally attached ovules, the style erect, 2.5-4.5 mm long. Fruits depressed globose, 3.5-6.5 x 7-9.5 cm, abruptly contracted into knob at pedicel attachment, the Calyx-lobes forming woody knobs, the pericarp 4-5 mm thick; operculum convex, umbonate. Seeds 4 x 2 cm.

Previously we have identified this species as Eschweilera reversa which is a synonym of E. pittieri. See discussion of latter species for further clarification of this problem.The clasping leaf base, referred to in the specific epithet, is unique in Neotropical Lecythidaceae.
