Description:

Species Description - Canopy to emergent trees, to 40 m tall, unbuttressed. Bark fissured, the inner bark white to yellowish white. Twigs 2-3 mm diam., usually gray, less frequently reddish brown, lenticels inconspicuous but vertically oriented when present. Leaves not deciduous; petioles 7-10 mm long; blades widely obovate, 5-8 x 3-5.5 cm, abaxial surface whitish (caused by microscopic, cuticular papillae), with 7-12 pairs of lateral veins; base acute to obtuse; apex rounded or truncate into abruptly acuminate tip; margins entire. Inflorescences terminal or in leaf axils, simple spikes or racemes, sometimes several in same leaf axil; pedicels absent to 4 mm long, puberulous. Flowers diurnal, 2-3 cm diam.; calyx-lobes 4.5-6.5 x 4-6 mm; petals white, 14-21 x 11-14 mm; androecial hood curved inward, light yellow, the staminal ring with ca. 110-135 stamens, the filaments ca. 1.8 mm long, slightly clavate, the anthers 0.5 mm long; hypanthium often sulcate between calyx-lobes, somewhat rugose, puberulous; ovary (3-)4-locular, with 4-8 basally attached ovules in each locule, the style obliquely oriented to geniculate, 3-4 mm long. Fruits indehiscent, falling to ground with seeds inside, globose, 3-3.5 x 4-5 cm, the calycine ring inserted near middle; operculum umbonate. Seeds 1-3 per fruit.

Discussion:

Phenology. Flowers in Nov and fruits in Apr. Common name. Jarana da folha pequena. Comments. Lecythis parvifructa is characterized by its (1) fissured bark with white to yellowish white inner bark, (2) small, widely obovate leaves with whitish abaxial surface, (3) small flowers with a relatively long, geniculate style, and (4) small, globose fruits that fall to the ground with the seeds inside at maturity.
