Description:

Author: Scott A. Mori

Type genus: Lecythis Loefl.

Description: Small to large trees. Leaves alternate, simple, exstipulate or with minute, caducous stipules, without pellucid punctations, often with cork warts. Flowers actinomorphic or zygomorphic; petals usually present (absent in subfamily Foetidioideae; stamens numerous, connate at base into staminal ring or scarcely connate in subfamily Foetidioideae), the ring actinomorphic or prolonged on one side into strap-like structure which arches over summit of ovary; intrastaminal disc present (some species of Barringtonia and Grias or absent (the remaining species); ovary inferior to half inferior. Fruits fibrous berries, dry drupes, or woody circumscissile capsules with one to many seeds. Seeds with or without cotyledons. X = 16, 17, or multiples of these numbers.

Distribution: Species of Foetidioideae are found in Madagascar, Mauritius, and the east African tropics; species of Planchonioideae occur in the African and Asian tropics, Australia, and the Pacific Islands; and species of Lecythidoideae are limited to the New World tropics.

Genera: There are currently 18 genera recognized in the Lecythidaceae sensu lato (Huang et al., 2008; Mori et al., 2007) distributed in three subfamilies as follows: Foetidioideae (Foetidia), Planchonioideae (Abdulmajidia, Barringtonia, Petersianthus, Chydenanthus, Careya, and Planchonia), and Lecythidoideae (Allantoma, Bertholletia, Cariniana, Corythophora, Couratari, Couroupita, Eschweilera, Grias, Gustavia, and Lecythis. However, Mori et al. (2007) have suggested that the currently circumscribed Eschweilera and Lecythis are not monophyletic.

Taxonomic notes: The Lecythidaceae are now considered to consist of three subfamilies (Foetidioideae, Planchonioideae, and Lecythidadoideae) with the Napoleonaceae (formerly Lecythidaceae subfam. Napoleonaeoideae) and the Scytopetalaceae (including Asteranthos brasiliensis) recognized as separate families (Mori et al., 2007).
