Description:
Author: Scott A. Mori & Ghillean T. Prance
Type: Same as for Eschweilera piresii S. A. Mori
Description: rees, to 40 m x 100 cm. Leaves not known to flush just before flowering; petioles 3-5 mm long; blades elliptic, 7-8 x 3-4 cm, glabrous, without punctae, coriaceous, the adaxial surface smooth and somewhat shiny, the base acute, the margins entire, the apex acute to obtuse, the acumen blunt; petiole 3-5 mm long; secondary veins in 9-10 pairs. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, unbranched or once branched paniculate arrangement of racemes, the rachises glabrous, the principal one 2-8 cm long, the pedicels glabrous, 3 mm long. Flowers ca. 1.5 cm diam.; calyx with 6 lobes, the lobes widely ovate, 2.5-3.5 x 1.5-3 mm, ascending, imbricate at base, abaxially convex, adaxially flat to slightly concave; petals 6, widely obovate, 6-10 x 5-8 mm, white in subsp. piresii and green in subsp. viridipetala; androecium, the hood 7-8 x 8 mm, with double coil; ovary 2-locular, each with 3-4 basally attached ovules, the style nearly as thick as opening in stamina ring, 1.3 mm long. Fruits known only from very immature specimens, turbinate, the calycine rim with 6 woody knobs inserted near apex, the exocarp pitted, .
Common names: None recorded.
Distribution: This subspecies is restricted to eastern Amazonian Brazil in the state of ParĂ¡.
Ecology: Eschweilera piresii subsp. piresii is a canopy tree found in periodically-flooded forest.
Phenology: Flowering collections of this subspecies have been collected in Jan, Feb, and May.
Pollination: No observations recorded but the white petals and yellow androecial hood indicates bees as the pollinators.
Dispersal: No observations recorded.
Field characters: Eschweilera piresii subsp. piresii is characterized by its preference for periodically flooded forests; leaf blades with a smooth adaxial surface and obtuse to rounded apices; and relatively small, cup-shaped fruits.
Taxonomic notes: This subspecies differs from subsp. viridipetala in its six, white petals; yellow androecial hood; and more rounded leaf blade apices.
Uses: None recorded.
Etymology: Same as for the species.
