Description:

Type: Type. Cuatrecasas 14394 (holotype, F; isotype, COL). Colombia. Valle: Cordillera occidental, hoya del Rio Anchicaya, lado derecho, bosques entre Pavas y Miramar, 350-450 malt, 16 Apr 1943 (fl).

Taxonomic notes: This species was formerly treated as a valid species by Mori in Mori & Prance (1979) but is now treated as a synonym of Gustavia occidentalis (see that species page for a more detailed discussion of this change).

Etymology: The specific epithet refers to the solitary flowers arising from the axils of the leaves or from the leaf scars just below the leaves.
