Description:
Author: Scott A. Mori & Nathan P. Smith
Type: Brazil. Amapa: Mun. of Mazagao, BR-156, incomplete rd. toward Monte Dourado, 75-80 km WSW of Macapa, 5-10 km SW of Rio Preto, approx. 0008'S, 51°48'W, 19 Dec 1984 (fl), Daly & Cardoso 3917 (holotype, HAMAB; isotypes, COL, F, MG, NY, P, U, US, YEN).
Description: Understory trees, to 12 m tall. Bark brown, with abundant, shallow, vertical cracks, the outer bark 3 mm thick, the inner bark 6 mm thick, the slash pinkish, with alternating, vertically oriented, white and pink streaks. Leaves: petioles 10-23 mm long; blades elliptic to widely elliptic or oblong, 10-18 x 5-9 cm, glabrous, somewhat glaucescent abaxially, coriaceous, with 9-13 pairs of lateral veins, the base obtuse to rounded, the margins entire, the apex acuminate. Inflorescences usually axillary, sometimes terminal or ramiflorous, racemose, usually unbranched, whitish puberulous, the principal rachis 4-6 cm long, subtended by persistent, clasping cataphylls, the pedicel 10-14 mm long, subtended by an oblong, persistent bract 5.5-9 x 2-5.5 mm and two oblong, persistent bracteoles 5-7 x 2-3.5 mm, both inserted at same level. Flowers ca. 5 cm diam.; hypanthium tapered into well-defined pedicel; calyx-lobes 6, very widely ovate to ovate, 5-7 x 4.5-6 mm, imbricate, thick, gibbous at base, convex abaxially, flat to slightly concave adaxially; petals 6, pink or lilac, widely to narrowly obovate, 20-36 x 14-25 mm; androecium zygomorphic, the staminal ring asymmetric, with ca. 300 stamens, the filaments 1.6-1.8 mm long, clavate, with scattered, reddish-brown pigment spots, the anthers 0.4-0.6 mm long, the hood ca. 26 x 26 mm, with 2 coils, yellow, with poorly developed external marginal groove between appendages and hood proper; ovary 2-locular, the ovules 7-11 per locules, inserted on peg-like placenta arising from locule floor, the style not differentiated from summit of ovary. Fruits and seeds unknown.
Common names: None known.
Distribution: Known only from the type locality and several other collections near the Amazon River in Pará, Brazil.
Ecology: An understory tree of non-flooded forest.
Phenology: No reports of pollination have been recorded.
Dispersal: No reports of dispersal have been recorded.
Predation: No observations recorded.
Field characters: See taxonomic notes.
Taxonomic notes: Within its distribution, E. rabeliana is most readily confused with E. pedicellata which is also an understory tree with large flowers and pink or lilac petals. Eschweilera rabeliana differs from E. pedicellata in its bark with more well-developed vertical cracks; more coriaceous leaves; persistent bracts and bracteoles; and 2- vs. 3-coiled androecial hood.
Conservation: IUCN Red List: Endangered B1+2c, D ver 2.3 (Pires O'Brien, J. 1998. Eschweilera rabeliana. In: IUCN 2013. IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Version 2013.2. www.iucnredlist.org. Downloaded on 07 February 2014.).
Uses: None known.
Etymology: This species is named in honor of Benedito Rabelo who first discovered it.
