Description:
Type: COLOMBIA. Valle: Costa de Pacífico, Río Cajambre, 8 May 1944(fl), Cuatrecasas 17448 (LECTOTYPE: F - herb. no. 1358486, designated Fl. Neotrop. Monogr. 21(II). 1990; ISOLECTOTYPES: F - herb. no. 1358487, NY, U)
Description: Trees, 35 m x 60 cm. Bark dark brown, thick. Leaf blades 15-32 x 7-11 cm, elliptic to oblong, coriaceous, glabrous, punctate abaxially, the base obtuse, the margins entire; the apex short acuminate; secondary veins in 15-16 pairs, these sulcate above, salient below; petioles 16-20 mm long. Inflorescences axillary, once-branched, spicate, the principal rachis to 12 cm long, rough, with scattered lenticels, especially towards base; pedicel/hypanthium not sulcate, puberulous, sparsely lenticellate, truncate at articulation. Flowers known from buds only; calyx with 6 lobes, the lobes widely ovate, 6 x 5-6 mm, erect, convex abaxially, flat to concave adaxially, the bases imbricate for 3/4 length; petals purple. Fruits 2.5 x 6.5 cm (excluding operculum), depressed globose, the calycine ring inserted below middle, the suracalycine zone erect, the infracalycine zone truncate to pedicel, the pericarp 5 mm thick. Seeds 2-3 per fruit.
Distribution: From the Pacific coast of Coclé, Panama; Colombia; and Ecuador from near sea level to 600 m alt.
Common names: Guasco blanco in Valle del Cauca, Colombia.
Phenology: The Panamanian collections were gathered in flower in Dec and Feb; the Ecuadorian and Valle del Cauca specimens in flower in May and June; and the Chocó, Colombia collections in flower in September.
Pollination: The androecial hood has not been described but it presumably produces nectar and the flowers are most likely dispersed by bees
Dispersal: The fruits and seeds have not been described
Taxonomic notes: This species is characterized by its large leaves, usually short but branched inflorescences, sessile flowers, and purple petals.
Uses: None recorded
Etymology: The bark of this species is described as thick and this must be what is alluded to in the specific epithet which translates as "thick-skinned."
