Description:
Author: Scott A. Mori & Nathan P. Smith
Type: Peru. Loreto: Mishuyaco, nr. Iquitos, 1929 (fl), Klug 597 (holotype, B, not found).
Description: Tree, 18 m tall. Twigs slender, dark gray, 2-3 mm thick. Leaves: petioles 5 mm long, 1.5 mm thick, dark brown; blades lanceolate-oblong or oblong lanceolate, up to lO x 4 cm, often narrower, chartaceous, green adaxially, brownish-green abaxially, with rather irregular lateral veins, 6-12 mm apart, the base broadly cuneate, the margins entire, the apex abruptly acute. Inflorescences weakly paniculate arrangement of racemes, with numerous flowers, the principal rachis 5 cm long, the flowers 2-6 mm apart; pedicel persistent, 1 mm long, becoming thickened. Flowers: calyx-lobes 6, ovate, the anterior margin lacerate-fimbriate, glabrous; petals up to 15 mm long, yellow; androecium zygomorphic, 15 mm long when flattened out, staminal ring 8 mm diam., the filaments and anthers minute, the hood 3 mm long, antherless; gynoecium with minute style. Fruits and seeds not studied.
Common names: None known.
Distribution: Known only from the type locality.
Ecology: Very little is known about the ecology of this species.
Phenology: Flowers have been collected between Oct and Nov.
Pollination: No reports of pollination have been recorded.
Dispersal: No reports of dispersal have been recorded.
Predation: No observations recorded.
Field characters: Eschweilera klugii is characterized by relatively small leaves, short pedicels, small flowers, yellow petals, and a minute style. However, it is not clear from the protologue if the pedicel length refers only to that part remaining on the rachis of the inflorescence after the flower falls or to the entire length.
Taxonomic notes: The species description provided here is based on the Latin protologue of Knuth (1939). We do not have collections that match all of these features and therefore we are treating this species as incompletely known until a duplicate of the type is studied.
Conservation: IUCN Red List: Not on list (Feb 2014).
Uses: None known.
Etymology: This speciers is named in honor of G. Klug, the collector of the type.
Source: This species page is based on Mori in Mori & Prance, 1990.
