Taxonomic notes: Although Mori in Prance & Mori (1979) designated a lectotype for this name, that was not necessary because the holotype and isotypes were already indicated by Cuatrecasas. The name is now considered to be a synonym of Gustavia occidentalis.
Type: Colombia. Valle del Cauca: Cordillera Occidental, vertiente occidental, Hoya del rio Sanquinini, lado isquierda, La Laguna, bosques, 1250-1400 m, Cuatrcasas 15531 (Holotype, COL 79319; Isotypes, F-2 sheets, NY).
