Description:

Species Description - Emergent trees, to 50 m tall, buttressed. Bark smooth, often with shallow, vertical cracks and vertically oriented lenticels, the outer bark 1-3 mm thick, the inner bark 5-10 mm thick, pinkish. Leaves: petioles 13-25 mm long; blades elliptic to widely elliptic or oblong to widely oblong, 15-20 x 6-11 cm, coriaceous, pubescent abaxially, with 17-25 pairs of secondary veins, the tertiary veins percurrent; base obtuse to rounded; apex acuminate; margins entire. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, racemes or once-branched paniculate arrangements of racemes; pedicels 10-20 mm long. Flowers when leaves absent; calyx of 6, triangular-ovate lobes, 3-4 mm long; petals oblong-spatulate, 20-30 mm long, slightly cucullate at apex, bright purple; androecial hood rose purple, ca. 33 mm long, the exterior without echinate appendages; staminal ring with 15-25 stamens inserted mostly in single row; hypanthium densely pubescent. Fruits cylindric, somewhat triangular in cross section, broadest at middle, 12-17 x 6 cm, the pericarp ca. 4 mm thick, lenticellate on exterior.

Discussion:

Phenology. Flowers from Jun to Feb, but the most profuse flowering occurs from Sep to Nov. This species usually flowers when leafless. Common name. TauarĂ­. Comments. This species is characterized by its (1) well-developed buttresses, (2) leaves with stellate hairs on the abaxial surface, (3) purple flowers appearing when the tree is leafless, and (4) fruits with a lenticellate exocarp.
