Description:
Species Description - Emergent trees, to 50 m tall, buttressed. Bark smooth, often with shallow, vertical cracks and vertically oriented lenticels, the outer bark 1-3 mm thick, the inner bark 5-10 mm thick, pinkish. Leaves: petioles 13-25 mm long; blades elliptic to widely elliptic or oblong to widely oblong, 15-20 x 6-11 cm, coriaceous, pubescent abaxially, with 17-25 pairs of secondary veins, the tertiary veins percurrent; base obtuse to rounded; apex acuminate; margins entire. Inflorescences terminal or axillary, racemes or once-branched paniculate arrangements of racemes; pedicels 10-20 mm long. Flowers when leaves absent; calyx of 6, triangular-ovate lobes, 3-4 mm long; petals oblong-spatulate, 20-30 mm long, slightly cucullate at apex, bright purple; androecial hood rose purple, ca. 33 mm long, the exterior without echinate appendages; staminal ring with 15-25 stamens inserted mostly in single row; hypanthium densely pubescent. Fruits cylindric, somewhat triangular in cross section, broadest at middle, 12-17 x 6 cm, the pericarp ca. 4 mm thick, lenticellate on exterior.

Discussion:
Phenology. Flowers from Jun to Feb, but the most profuse flowering occurs from Sep to Nov. This species usually flowers when leafless. Common name. TauarĂ. Comments. This species is characterized by its (1) well-developed buttresses, (2) leaves with stellate hairs on the abaxial surface, (3) purple flowers appearing when the tree is leafless, and (4) fruits with a lenticellate exocarp.
