We differentiate the staminal tube extension from the ligule of other zygomorphic-flowered Lecythidaceae by defining the former as an extension from a staminal tube and the latter as an extension from a staminal ring. We also define the zygmorphy found in species of Cariniana as oblique zygomorphy and that from a staminal ring as zygomorphy. This difference is made for two reasons; in the first place the zygomorphy arises in two separate ways and, in the second place, the staminal tube extension of some species (e.g., >Cariniana parvifolia is manifested only as a slight extension from staminal tube whereas in other species, the extension arches over the staminal tube (e.g., Cariniana micrantha
