Term:

Subsidiary cells
Definition:

Epidermal cells that surround stomates and are different in shape, size, or position from other epidermal cells.
Notes:

In neotrpical Lecythidaceae, anomocytic, anisocytic, and paracytic subsidiary cells have been documented (Mori & Black, 1987). There is a tendency for the actinomorphic-flowered species (e.g., Gustavia) to have the first two types and the zygomorphic-flowered species to have paracytic subsidiary cells, but exceptions to this are known.
