Term:
Eophyll
Eophyll
Definition:
The first leaves of a seedling, other than cotyledons, which may or may not be similar to adult leaves in form and position.
The first leaves of a seedling, other than cotyledons, which may or may not be similar to adult leaves in form and position.
Notes:
In species of Lecythidaceae with leaf-like cotyledons (Allantoma except A. lineata, Cariniana, Couratari, and Couroupita), the eophylls differ from the adult leaves in shape and in their opposite versus alternate arrangement. In species with fleshy cotyledons (>Gustavia>) and those with no apparent cotyledons (Allantoma lineata, Bertholletia, Corythophora, Eschweilera, Grias, and Lecythis), the eophylls are similar to the adult leaves in form and position; they are, however, smaller and often preceded on the stem by cataphylls.
