Description: Placentation of L. poiteaui as shown in longitudinal section based on Mori & Bolten 8636 from Suriname. This is a section made at right angles through the septum and the placenta and showing two of the four locules of this species. Note that this section shows a single septal unit made up of tissues from adjacent carpels (= locules) and the placental units, made up of tissue from the same carpel (= locule). The view is from the outside to the inside of the ovary. Compare this image with the cross-section made of the same collection.

Placenta arched

Definition:

A type of placentation in which the placenta arches from the top of the lower septum and gets progressively thicker toward the base as seen in medial longitudinal section.

Notes:

This feature is best observed in species of the Lecythis poiteaui and L. chartacea clades.
