Term:
Enclosed bud
Enclosed bud
Definition:
A bud that is either completed surrounded by the calyx or that has a pore-like or slit-like opening at early developmental stages.
A bud that is either completed surrounded by the calyx or that has a pore-like or slit-like opening at early developmental stages.
Notes:
In neotropical Lecythidaceae, closed buds are only found in all species of Grias except for G. neuberthii and in Bertholletia excelsa. Tsou and Mori (2007) have demonstrated that the latter species has 6 calyx primordia in early stages of development which fuse together later in development. Mature buds have a terminal slit and at anthesis the calyx consists of only two lobes. In species of Grias with closed buds some species are completely closed (e.g., Grias peruviana) and other species (e.g., Grias cauliflora) appear to have a terminal pore. In these species the bud is not calyptrate but instead splits open irregularly.
