This study presents the results of an investigation of the vegetative and reproductive structures of the West African family Scytopetalaceae. Special emphasis is paid to inflorescence morphology and seed anatomy, especially the presence and absence of ruminate endosperm. A strong case is made for placing Asteranthos in the Scytopetalaceae and for treating the Scytopetalaceae as separate from the Lecythidaceae.
