Description:

Pileus 3-10 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, matted subtomentose, brown (5F7) fading to 5E7, often the darker color with a paler band at the margin, even, fading to 5C-D5. Flesh yellow, bluing with exposure. Hymenophore tubulose, yellow with orange pores, bluing when injured; orange color dissipating with age, depressed aroung the stipe, up to 1 cm deep, with 2-3(-4) pores per mm. Stipe short, 3-4.5 cm long, 1-2 cm broad, equal to clavate-subventricose to clavate, dry, conspicuously brown pruinose (actually finely punctate) on a yellow (3A4) ground with patchy or not but obvious velvety base, the latter starting out orange yellow, eventually red brown; interior yellow bluing with exposure. Deciduous woods. Nyssa, Quercus palustris. Gregarious. On soil.
