Description:
Pileus 1-3 cm broad, plane to depressed, dry, tomentose to matted tomentose, orange (6-7B-C8-7) or sometimes developing yellow (4A6) areas. Flesh bright yellow (4A7), unchanging with exposure, up to 5 mm thick, NH4(-) on pileus and flesh. Lamellae decurrent, close, orange to orange brown (7C8), staining green with bruising, with even edges. Stipe 3-5 cm long, 4-5 mm broad, equal, dry, floccose-fibrillose, red to orange with yellow undertones, with bright yellow basal mycelium; interior solid, yellow, not changing with exposure. Clamp connections absent. Spores subellipsoid in face view, subellipsoid in profile with a ±flattened adaxial region. Similar to P. coccineus Corner, but lacks the cyanescent flesh of that species and the spores are smaller.
