A running list of geography odd situations and special cases that we come across in EMu
County Format, General
All United States counties include “Co.” after the name, exceptions:
Alaska: no term following name
Louisiana: Parish following name
Virginia: has independent cities in addition to counties, noted as “(Independent City)” following city name
Nevada: one independent city in addition to counties, Carson City, noted as “Carson City (Independent City)”
Mismatched Geography Hierarchy in EMu
First administrative division level (province/state):
- Canary Islands - Country: Spain, Continent: Africa (not Europe)
- Madeira - Country: Portugal, Continent: Africa (not Europe)
- Hawaii - Country: U.S.A, Continent: Oceania (not North America)
Country level:
- Trinidad and Tobago -Continent: South America (not West Indies)
- Bermuda - Continent: North America (might be assumed to be West Indies)
Geography Hierarchy in EMu that differs from Statoids
- United Kingdom: Province/state level (primary administrative division) does not match Statoids. Province/state look up list consists of the four countries of the United Kingdom; England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, rather than the primary administrative division list provided on Statoids. Alternatively, use the Statoid's primary administrative division list as the secondary administrative division in EMu, according to country.
- Brazil: District/county (second administrative division) does not match Statoids. Statoids presents Brazil's "microregions" as the second administrative divisons, which "...have no administrative function; they were defined by the federal government for purposes of convenience" (Law, 2007). Alternatively, the district/county look up list follows the Wikipedia page "List of municipalities of Brazil" according to state (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_municipalities_of_Brazil).
