Description
Pileus 3.5-15 cm broad, convex to plane, dry to tacky (not viscid) when moist, very finely matted, red (9-10B,C,D8), with some fine yellow areas near margin with age, slowly and erratically bluing/blackening when bruised. Flesh yellow, bluing when exposed but with an unchanging zone just beneath the pileus surface, with mild odor and taste. Tubes adnate to adnexed, yellow, bluing, with pores pale orange to dull yellow, cyanescent. Stipe 6-10 cm long, 1.5-4 cm broad, equal to subclavate, dry, finely reticulate at apex or on upper 1/3 or sometimes absent, subpruinose to glabrescent below; reticulum yellow or pale red; pale yellow at apex, yellow to orange to pale red downward, yellow at base with white basal mycelium, with interior bright and intense lemon yellow to chrome yellow, bluing not at all or rarely when young; the cyanescence usually restricted to the apex or upper portion, and the lower part unchanging or with scattered staining and remaining intensely yellow.
