(1837) 23 (sp. nov.) ; ed. 2 (1845) 17; ed. 3. 1 (1877) 32 = PIPER RETROFRACTUM Vahl. The species is' common and widely distributed at low altitudes in the Philippines and is especially abundant in those provinces from which Blanco received most of his botanical material. It is still known in the vicinity of Manila as sabia, the native name cited by Blanco.
