January 8, 1924. Urbana, Illinois, Dr. N. L. Britton, H.Y. Botanical Garden, Bronx Park, Hew York City. Dear Britton I could not separate the type of Piper tenuiamentum (Preuss 1456) from the type of P.trinitatis (Gard. Herb. 6010) in the Candol- lean herbarium. The latter has priority. I am returning the sheets sent on Hoy. 9, and have named them-as follows v^iittier 5964 (Venezuela). Piper anisatum HBK. (1815) .Broadway 112, 4^7 (Cayenne). Piper decumanum Aubl. (1775). , Gard. Herb. 2613 (Trinidad). Piper maracasense n.sp. y ' Clearly distinct from your cotype of P.Hartii. N/ Broadway 755 (Venezuela). Piper smilacifolium. v/^roadway 557 (Venezuela) . Piper Seitzii. ^Lehmann 9006 (Colombia). Piper auritum in the broadest sense, i/^Britton & Britton 2190 (Trinidad). Peperomia rupicola ined. y/Gard. Herb. 5749. w « m « ^Gleason 3675 (Brit. Guiana). Peperomia wainiana n.sp. yGard. Herb. 5704 (Trinidad). Peperomia trinitatis ined. Y Broadway 430 (Venezuela). Phoradendron Zuloagae. Thank you for letting me see I. E. Brown»s note on Peperomia piperea,- showing that the type consists of stem and foliage of an aroid (Monstera?) and a spike of some Piper. Probably the latter will not permit it ever to be identified with fuller material,- but who knows? Field No. NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 04149339 PIPERACEAE Piper marginatum Jacq. var. anisatum C.DC )et. Wm. Trelease and T. G. Yuncker NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN Plants of Santa Marta, United States of Colombia Collecteq by Herbert H. Smith, 1898-1899 So far as I have seen P.tobagoanum it occurs only' on Tobago (iggers 5673, 5753; Broadway 3104), except for the Venezuelan speci- men« I do .not see why Broadway 557 does not run another Tobago species on to the mainland. I hardly know how to answer your question as to publishing nondescripts. In large and confused genera, scattered descriptions cause an awful lot of trouble especially if the immediate affinities of each are not very precisely indicated. I have taken up the A. Piperaceae in the hope of getting them into a coherent whole for Horth American Flora, sometime. Taking the prevalent view of very narrowly defined species, I have put names to a good many forms that seem to differ from described species as much as^these do from one- another. Seeing type material has changed my opinion frequently in both respects. When I get the manuscript finished (it really is about done for Peperomia^it will be radical enougln,- but very conservative, 04149339
