Common in dry forest below 1000 feet.

Description
Tree, to 30-35 feet. Sometimes reduced to a shrub. The main stem is covered with clusters of slender spines 1-3 inches long, and sometimes these also cover the branches. Flowers March-May, bright yellow, flowers open about an hour before noon, closing by 2 or 3 o'clock. Leaves deciduous in March or April and the flowering tree is nearly always leafless.
