On dry, rocky slopes in pinyon-juniper woodland. With Juniperus osteosperma, Pinus monophylla, Quercus turbinella, Fallugia paradoxa, Salazaria mexicana, Agropyron, Stipa spp, Sitanion, Galium spp, Ipomopsis, Menodora scabra, and many others.
