The RSABG community is sad to announce the passing of Robert F. "Bob" Thorne, who died peacefully in his sleep in Claremont, CA, on March 24 at the age of 94.

Dr. Thorne was Curator of the Herbarium at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, having joined the Garden’s staff in 1962. He added immensely to the collection during his long career and continued as Curator Emeritus until his death. Dr. Thorne continued to be professionally active until recently, publishing scientific works well into the past decade. Renowned internationally for his work on evolutionary relationships and biogeographic patterns among flowering plants, he also made many very important contributions to floristic knowledge in western North America. His last publication was on the plants of the high Sierra San Pedro Mártir in Baja California. He will be missed, and yet will always be among us.
