Merostachys	BAHIA, BRAZIL
Municipio Porto Seguro: Forested sloped of morro on Fazen-
da Carvalho, ca. 26 km vest of town of Monte Pascoal, at
end of road that intersects with BR 101 in Monte Pascoal.
Robust bamboo on upper slopes of mountain from 380m to
summit at WOm elev. Clumps of ca. 50 culms, the culms
solid, not erect but arching over immediately, 10-15m
long, 2cm. diam., with thick walls and filled with pith,
scaberulous and striated-mottled dark and light green.
Culm leaves : sheath becomes brown and shed when branches
develop; blade small, reflexed, caducous. When new culm
freshly cut the pith is white but within several minutes
begins to turn red and then brown. All clumps sterile ex-
cept one in which culms are dead and bearing branches with
old inflorescences from which most sp'ikelets have fallen.
