Merostachys	BAHIA, BRAZIL
Municipio Porto Seguro: Forested sloped of morro on Fazen-
da Carvalho, ca. 2o liai vest of tovn of Monte Pascoal, at
end of road that intersects vith BR 101 in Monte Pascoal.
Robust bamboo on upper sloi>es of mountain from 380m to
summit at l*60m elev. Clumps of ca. 50 culms, the culms
solid, not erect but arching over immediately, 10-15m
long, 2cm. diam., vith thick vails and filled vith pith,
seaberulous and striated-mottled dark and light green.
Culm leaves : sheath becomes brovm and shed vhen branches
develop; blade small, reflexed, caducous. When nev culm
freshly cut the pith is vhite but vithin several minutes
begins to turn red and then brovn. All clumps sterile ex-
cept one in vhich culms are dead and bearing branches vith
old inflorescences from vhich most sp'ikelets have fallen.
