One of the common names for the genus Erythronium is the dogtooth violet, which is fitting as we enter the dog days of summer. This lovely species, however, goes by the common name Pacific fawn-lily.

Erthronium helenae is named for Mount St. Helena in California, as the species only grows on slopes with serpentine soils around this mountain.
