This lichen grows as an epiphyte on trees. They require clean air, and can be used as an indicator for air quality. Specimens like this one indicate good air quality. Some species can grow up to 6 feet long! In areas with poor air quality, this lichen may not survive, and if it does, its growth will be severely stunted. Many different species within this genus are referred to with a common name of 'old man's beard' because of their pendant growth form.
