When mycologists collect mushrooms or other fungal fruiting bodies, it's important to know what they look like alive. Today this usually means taking photographs. Historically, mycologists relied on more artistic talents, usually watercolor paintings, to capture the essence of their collection. Within our fungal herbarium, we have several interesting sets of mushroom paintings, and as we digitize our collections we're always excited to find more.
