United States of America. New York. Westchester Wilderness Walk/Zofnass Family Preserve, Town of Pound Ridge. In the vicinity of the second bridge on the Joshua Hobby Lane. Just north of junction with the Upper Shad Road. Alt. 143m. (469 ft.)

Description:

Tree, 4 m tall. Plants dioecious. Male catkins in all stages of flowering, covered by long, white trichomes (= hairs). Flowers densely placed in catkins (= aments), subtended by a black scale, the stamens likely two per flower, the filaments long, white, the anthers yellow when young. Leaf buds just starting to open. Phenology of specimen: Flower.

Habitat:

Wet area by bridge.

Feature Notes:

Contrary to what is expected from plants with catkins, species of Calyx are pollinated by insects which are rewarded by nectar.
